Brain fog is real, and it can be debilitating and persistent. But brain fog is not a medical condition or diagnosis, per se. Rather, it is refers to a collection of symptoms which may relate to a number of other conditions, each of which can result in short-term or long-term cognitive dysfunction or impaired performance.
For a very long time, the symptoms of brain fog have been misunderstood and therefore, have frequently gone untreated. At a loss to understand the presenting symptoms, the medical community has frequently ignored or dismissed the patient's complaints as a product of an overactive imagination, hypochondriasis, attention seeking, or more serious psychological issues.
Due to the increasing prevalence of brain fog, occurring in association with a number of medical conditions, and most recently with worrisome frequency in post Covid patients, the medical community is now paying more attention. Researchers are realizing that there is a greater need to understand the underlying causative factors involved and hopefully develop effective treatments and preventive measures.
Increasingly, Covid survivors are reporting that ongoing brain fog is impairing their ability to work and function normally. Current theories postulate that the body’s initial immune response to the virus may be delayed, or that the adaptive immune response may be delayed in shutting down, resulting in persistent inflammation of the brain.
Mental cloudiness can be experienced during and after cancer treatment, but in particular during or after chemotherapy. The exact cause is not known, but the effects of chemo brain can be long lasting.
One of the reasons that PTSD causes brain fog is that the brain may not be functioning optimally. Current theories include the fact that PTSD increases stress hormones, such as cortisol, significantly disrupts sleep, and changes how the brain functions in a number of ways.
Depression is linked to physical changes in the brain, which can range from increased inflammation, all the way to actual brain shrinkage in areas such as the Hippocampus. Chronic inflammation can lead to cell death, contributing to decreased neurotransmitter production as well as reduced neuroplasticity.
An estimated 60 percent of middle-aged women report difficulty concentrating and other issues with cognition. These issues appear to spike in women going through perimenopause, during which hormone levels fluctuate causing a range of symptoms.
Brain inflammation is considered to be a key factor in several kinds of mental dysfunction, including but not limited to brain fog. COVID 19 infection appears to lead to increased brain inflammation. Once in the blood stream the virus can spread everywhere, with the capability of spreading across the entire brain, impacting both the systemic immune system as well as the brain's specialized immune system. Additionally other factors such as environmental toxins, prolonged stress, inadequate vitamin and antioxidant levels, poor nutrition, sleep deprivation, or possible side effects of medications, can all work to stress and suppress the brain and the body, impairing the ability to return to a normal state of functioning, know as homeostasis.
To date, recommended treatments may include a trail of certain medications (which in and of themselves, can sometimes cause brain fog), nutritional supplements, improved diet, a better sleep schedule, more exercise, and the utilization of compensatory strategies and resources, such timers, calendars and reminder lists. Important and helpful as each of these can be, unfortunately, none of them is a panacea.
Supplements, medication, and healthy nutrition all require viable and unobstructed pathways to the brain, as well as brain cells capable of absorbing and utilizing the substances needed for their optimal functioning. Improving sleep quantity and quality is always essential, whenever possible. Exercise, while therapeutic must be tailored to the individual's course of recovery in order to avoid paradoxically increasing fatigue.
Clearly, there is a need for discovering new ways to facilitate brain fog recovery. We must find additional means of furnishing the brain with the resources it requires to repair and renew itself, as naturally occurs when the brain is healthy.

"There’s a significant change, for me, using, Auragen with Gamma flicker. The biggest change comes in the form of mental sharpness. With Gamma flicker I notice things more. I notice a lot more of what I have been missing or what I had been putting so far to the side, that it became problematic. Now I am keeping things mentally “within reach”, during my very busy day. By having more immediate access, I am able to remember better, specifically and generally. Projects, responsibilities, and goals no longer slip completely out of mind for such a long period, that I remember when it’s too late. I remember a lot more detail, I have more confidence that comes with that.”
"I personally found that the Auragen Gamma feature made the biggest difference in recovering my mental abilities after a bout with Covid. I experienced difficulty focusing and organizing thoughts, both during and even after my other symptoms left. I noticed a significant improvement after just the first Auragen Gamma session I had after Covid.
I continue to use it daily as it helps when my brain is tired or I simply want to have greater focus and concentration."
“I purchased the Light System with my husband, Mike, in mind, to address sleep issues. As a an RN working different shifts, he is on his feet 12 hours at a time, barely seeing daylight except on days off which leaves him feeling exhausted mentally and physically. Mike was experiencing vicarious trauma as a first responder in the emergency room. He uses the Renew program to recharge his body and feels better mentally and physically after just 30 minutes, with the added benefit of going into meditation during the session."
“This is the greatest thing around. People tell me all the time that I’m getting younger looking and my energy level is kept up with using the light. I really feel it has helped me stay healthier and also helps my brain to focus better. I highly recommend the DreamSpa* and feel everyone should have one. I purchased one for each of my daughters and they love it too.”
